Wisconsin's Minimum Auto Insurance Requirements
To legally drive in Wisconsin, you must carry at minimum:
| Coverage Type | Minimum Required |
|---|---|
| Bodily Injury Liability (per person) | $25,000 |
| Bodily Injury Liability (per accident) | $50,000 |
| Property Damage Liability | $10,000 |
| Uninsured Motorist (per person) | $25,000 |
| Uninsured Motorist (per accident) | $50,000 |
Why the Minimums Are Often Not Enough
Wisconsin's minimum limits were set years ago and have not kept pace with the true cost of accidents. Consider:
- A single emergency room visit can easily exceed $25,000
- A multi-day hospital stay can cost $100,000 or more
- If you cause an accident that exceeds your liability limits, you are personally responsible for the difference
Optional But Important Coverages
- Collision: Covers damage to your vehicle from an accident, regardless of fault
- Comprehensive: Covers non-collision damage — theft, weather, hitting a deer
- Medical Payments: Covers medical expenses for you and your passengers regardless of fault
- Underinsured Motorist: Protects you when the at-fault driver has insurance but not enough
- Roadside Assistance: Towing, flat tires, lockouts, and more
- Rental Reimbursement: Covers a rental car while yours is being repaired
Wisconsin's Uninsured Motorist Requirement
Wisconsin is one of the few states that requires uninsured motorist coverage. This protects you if you are hit by a driver who has no insurance at all. Given that an estimated 1 in 8 drivers nationwide is uninsured, this coverage is valuable.
